Strangers shamed me for wearing wig after cancer treatment and I feel so low

DEAR DEIDRE: I FOUGHT back from cancer and things were on the up until two strangers on a train jeered at me for wearing a wig.

Four years ago, aged 28, I was diagnosed first with cervical cancer, then with breast cancer.

I had my chemotherapy and radiotherapy and never missed a day from work.

I lost my hair but wore a wig, which never bothered me one bit. I was fighting a battle and didn’t care how I looked.

I beat both cancers and was looking forward to getting my life back on track.

But one day we went to London for a trip out. A couple sat opposite us, clearly drunk, and started pointing at me and laughing.

I overheard them say I should stay home as I looked such a mess.

Just before we got off, my partner told them what I’d been through and they apologised for their rudeness.

But I was so upset I couldn’t talk to anyone about what had happened.

That was more than two years ago but my problem is I still don’t go out socially – even as far as we are allowed these days.

I know they were drunk but I cannot get it out of my head. I struggle even to go to the supermarket.

I look “normal” now but I can’t face going out.

I want to be back to me but don’t know how.
