STUCK IN A RUT

I live a miserable existence and think I’ve been depressed since I was young

DEAR DEIDRE: I DREAM of a different life with a career, partner and kids but instead I live a miserable, lonely existence that is going nowhere.

I will be 32 in a few weeks and I am stuck in a dead-end job I hate. I think I have been depressed since I was a boy.

My dad was the age of my friends’ grandads. My mum was never there for me, often out with her various lovers or working in pubs.

I was lonely and bullied at school. If I told my mum she told me to stay away so my education suffered. I have no qualifications whatsoever.

I am also gay and have only had meaningless sexual encounters.

I am a private person but am starting to wonder if it is worth talking to a therapist.

DEIDRE SAYS: You are still a young man, don’t lose sight of your dreams.

Early experiences and role models shape us and it is still possible to build self-esteem as an adult.

My e-leaflet on Raising Self Esteem will help. Talking to a therapist will be very helpful to help you change.
