CONFLICT ZONE

Mum and sister are constantly arguing and it is making me want to move out

DEAR DEIDRE: I HATE living at home because my mum and my sister are constantly shouting and hitting each other.

I’m a boy of 17 and I am studying for my A levels.

My sister is 21 and she’s always been the black sheep of the family.

My mum is single and she’s great, but slanging matches with my sister end up with my sister pushing Mum and then Mum slaps her.

The neighbours have even intervened in the past, but when things calm down, neither Mum nor my sister will get any help. I don’t know what to do.

DEIDRE SAYS: Find a quiet moment to talk to your mother and tell her how her relationship with your sister is affecting you and your studies.

Tell her that it is abusive on both sides and it has to stop.

Encourage them both to read the techniques on how to manage difficult emotions in the e-leaflet on Managing Anger I’m sending you.
