I’m 42 and have been smoking since I was ten – how do I kick this horrible habit?
DEAR DEIDRE: I AM desperate to stop smoking.
I am a man of 42 and I’ve smoked since I was ten.
I lost my dad to lung cancer so I know the risks.
Now my GP has told me I have the early signs of lung disease and I need to stop smoking.
I have tried vaping, nicotine replacement therapy and tablets supposed to reduce the cravings but nothing works.
Can you help me?

DEIDRE SAYS: Nicotine itself creates the cravings that make you struggle to stop smoking.
If you can stop smoking – totally – for a maximum of four weeks, then you will break the spell of your nicotine addiction.
It’s just four difficult weeks when you must not have even a puff on a cigarette but then it gets so much easier.
Distract yourself by filling your time with fun and friends – even though socially distanced.
