FAMILY SECRET

My husband let slip that the dad of my niece’s daughter is her step-brother

DEAR DEIDRE: MY husband has let slip that the “unknown” dad of my niece’s daughter is actually her older step-brother.

My sister had my niece before she met the man who became her husband. He was divorced and had two sons who used to stay over at weekends.

My niece got pregnant aged 16. My sister never said who the father was but it turns out her husband told my husband it was his older son from his first marriage, who was then 18.

The men decided to keep it to themselves. My sister never confided in me. I am 61 and my sister is 58.

I feel hurt and surely the girl deserves to know who is her father. She is 19 now. Should I tell her?

You certainly should not talk directly to your niece’s daughter, but you could tell your sister you worry that this secret will come back to bite one day.

Family secrets often do, but your husband may be angry if you breach his confidence.
