My boyfriend’s family are giving us grief because I’m not a churchgoer

DEAR DEIDRE: MY boyfriend and I are happy together but we are getting grief from both of our families.

He is 25 and I am 22. We met six months ago.

He is very religious and goes to church every Sunday with his mum.

She’s not keen to meet me, as I’m not a churchgoer.

Now my family are complaining because they have met my boyfriend but I’ve not met his family.

Despite all the hassle, he is still with me.

DEIDRE SAYS: Family support is a bonus in a committed relation­ship but what matters most is that you and your boyfriend are happy together and share core values.

You might not be religious but I expect you do believe in honesty and fidelity.

If you are strong together, you both need to be assertive with your families about your choice of partner. You are adults making adult choices, whether they approve or not.
