BAD LOAN

My nephew’s mum says he shouldn’t have to pay back the £3k I lent him because I earn more

DEAR DEIDRE:  MY nephew owes me £3,000 I lent him to buy a car but his mum – my sister-in-law – shouted at me that he shouldn’t have to pay me back because I earn more.

I am thinking of taking legal action. I am a married man of 56 and my nephew is 24. I know he takes drugs and I believe he is addicted because he has stolen from his family in the past.

They have just turned a blind eye to what he’s done but why should I suffer? He gave me his word that he’d pay me back.

My wife and I have been arguing about it.

She thinks I should not chase the money as he has problems.

Should I just forget about the money?

DEIDRE SAYS: Pursuing this looks set to cause a lot of family – and marital – bad feeling and still not get your money back.

Unless you have written proof it was a loan, using the law will just escalate the tensions.

Check with Citizens Advice () but my advice would be to tell your nephew how disappointed you are and how clear it is he needs help.

Suggest he contacts FRANK (, 0300 123 6600).
