AT BAY

My teen daughter had a baby with a druggie layabout but I don’t want him around

DEAR DEIDRE:  THE choices my daughter has made horrify me.

She got pregnant aged 18 and now has a daughter of nearly eight months. The dad is a druggie, with no job or sense of responsibility. I’d so love to wrench my daughter away from him but that’s not my decision to make.

I could tell from the off that he was bad news but thought he’d be out of her life when she went to university. Then she became pregnant and that put an end to her plans.

She’s living at home but seeing him as much as the rules allow. Now he’s round the house every day. I’m 44 and divorced and I’ve told him to keep to my rules and just stay for an hour.

I’ve said I don’t want his lifestyle of drug use and crime around my home. Do you think I’m right?

DEIDRE SAYS: It may work better to be a little less confrontational. Ask your daughter what she loves about him. At least he has not just disappeared from her life and his daughter’s.

Ask her partner to tell you his hopes and his plans. With your help this could be the making of him. Talk to Family Lives for ongoing advice (, 0808 800 2222).
