My brother’s been making lockdown very awkward for me and our mum
DEAR DEIDRE: MY brother has been making the time during lockdown very awkward for me and my mum.
I’m living at Mum’s with my kids because our house is near the hospital and my husband is a nurse, so could pass on Covid.

My brother still lives at home with my mum. We’ve never got along well but my kids love him and always say hi to him. But he just ignores them. He’s not very nice to them.
There are 18 months between my brother and me. He’s 35 and I’m 33.
He’s got a daughter from an earlier relationship and he’s not allowed to see her because of the coronavirus. I don’t think that is helping.
Mum came in from work tonight and she sensed there was a bad atmosphere. I tried to talk to my brother but he bit my head off and stormed off upstairs.
DEIDRE SAYS: Lockdown is putting a real strain on a lot of families.
Find a quiet moment to talk to your brother alone. Say you want to be able to get along with him and ask if anything in particular is grating on him.
Rules allow for him to still see his daughter so, if that is worrying him, encourage him to seek help through Families Need Fathers who help to maintain a child’s relationship with both parents after a break-up (, 0300 0300 363).
