DAD DRAMA

I think I found evidence my dad is having an affair with another man

DEAR DEIDRE: I FOUND emails on my dad’s computer that led me to think he’s having some kind of affair with a man.

I’m wondering if I should tell Mum.

I have been furloughed and it was cheapest to come back to stay with my parents.

After living away for a while, that wasn’t ideal. I’m 27 and I’ve been feeling stifled.

Now I’ve got proof my dad is bored too . . . or bored with Mum, at least.

I went on his laptop to check my emails but the account that came up was his. I couldn’t help reading a few recent emails.

I know that was wrong but a few words caught my eye and curiosity got the better of me.

There were some he had sent to a man and they gave me the feeling this man was more than a friend.

They have been meeting up and it sounds like they are having an affair.

My instincts are usually spot-on with this kind of thing and I think I should let Mum know what I’ve seen.

Would you say that’s the right thing to do?

My head is a mess with all this. I had no idea my dad had gay feelings.

DEIDRE SAYS: I understand your worry but you could be stirring up trouble, perhaps with no cause.

You might simply have misunderstood those emails and you don’t have the inside track on the relationship between your parents.

If your dad is conflicted over his sexuality, that is not because he is bored.

This is their business, not yours.

If you are certain there is something wrong and it is worrying you, better that you go and talk to your dad.

Tell him you were disturbed by what you stumbled across and are worried for your mum.
