RICHARD JOHNSON made a winning return to the saddle after having to sit out some of the season with a broken arm. 

The champion jockey returned from his injury in time for Cheltenham as he notched up a double on his first day back riding on the 27th February.

The Champion jockey has been retained for many years by Philip Hobbs although, such is the nature of fighting at the top of the jockeys championship, he rides out for a large number of different trainers.

In recent years, he has enjoyed success for Colin Tizzard, Warren Greatrex and Tom Lacey.

How old is Richard Johnson?

Richard Johnson is 42 years old. His first winner under rules came in 1994 and he became champion conditional in the 1995/96 season.

His first champion jockey title didn't come until 2016, having finished runner-up an astonishing 16 times behind AP McCoy.

Johnson comes from a racing background, with his father being an amateur jockey and his mother a successful trainer.

Johnson has had many triumphs at the Cheltenham Festival, including successes in the four traditional championship races at the festival.

Johnson won the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Native River earlier this year and Looks Like Trouble in 2000.

He also won the 2002 Queen Mother Champion Chase with Flagship Uberalles, the 2003 Champion Hurdle with Rooster Booster and the Stayers' Hurdle with Anzum in 1999.
