Martin, 38, guided the Saints to promotion last year in his first season in charge, but it's been a disappointing return to the top tier of English football.

Southampton are rock-bottom of the division and nine points adrift from safety following a run of 13 defeats in their opening 16 matches of the 2024-25 campaign.

Martin managed just one Premier League victory against Everton in November, but has lost five of the last six and conceded FIVE in each of his last two home games against Chelsea and Spurs.

With the club having also scored a league-low 11 goals, Southampton chiefs made the decision to part ways with Under-21s manager Simon Rusk will take interim charge of the senior side.

But who will be next in the dugout?

It could be viewed as a bit of a poison chalice given no team has ever had five points or fewer at this stage of a Premier League campaign and avoided relegation.

It's a wide-open betting market with favourites swapping frequently at this early stage, but the latest frontrunner is former Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand at Evens.

Hjulmand, 52, led Denmark to a semi-final finish at Euro 2020 before suffering an extra-time defeat to England. He also guided his nation to the Round of 16 at Euro 2024 before stepping down.

Reports claim that Saints have previously considered hiring Hjulmand, who is understood to be open to taking a Premier League job.

Danny Rohl is next at 6/4.

The 35-year-old previously worked as an assistant at Saints under former head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl and has drawn plaudits for his exceptional progress at Sheffield Wednesday.

As the youngest EFL manager and in his first managerial role, Rohl guided the Owls away from relegation following their worst start to a season in the club's history last term.

They now sit in ninth position in the Championship table and just five points away from the play-off places.

West Bromwich Albion boss Carlos Corberan follows at 6/1.

Former Brighton and Chelsea boss Graham Potter is further back at 10/1. The 49-year-old has been without a job since being sacked by the Stamford Bridge club in April 2023.

But Potter told the Telegraph in September that he's felt "ready to return for a little while" and would judge each opportunity on its individual merits.

Former Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rafa Benitez and David Moyes are locked together at 12/1, along with significant market-mover Jesse Marsch, who's been cut from 50/1 to 12/1 overnight.
