Paris Saint-Germain vs Borussia Dortmund betting preview
Leading 1-0 from last week’s first leg, Dortmund will fancy their chances of reaching their first Champions League final in 11 years.
Those were the days of a certain Jurgen Klopp and Robert Lewandowski but the current crop certainly impressed in opening an advantage.
Niclas Fullkrug led the line well and wingers Jadon Sancho and Karim Adeyemi caused plenty of problems, aided by full-backs Julian Ryerson and Ian Maatsen.
Julian Brandt was another to offer much in an attacking sense and while PSG will count themselves unlucky not to have scored – they hit both posts – Dortmund were far from open at the back.
PSG remain favourites to progress to what would be their first final since a losing effort to Bayern Munich in COVID-hit 2020 and that’s probably about right, but this Dortmund team is more than capable of springing the upset.
It should also be remembered that in the last round, PSG were beaten 3-2 on home turf by Barcelona and, it’s fair to say, only got out of that hole due to Ronald Araujo’s daft tackle in the second leg which led to his first-half red card, one which completely swung the tie.
Away from the main markets, card angles look worth pursuing with Italian official Daniele Orsato having a long-standing reputation as one of this competition’s strictest referees, while PSG have been racking up plenty of cards throughout this tournament.
More stats on those angles are listed below – as are our best bets for what promises to be an exciting tie.
PSG vs Borussia Dortmund key stats
- Italian referee Daniele Orsato has shown 4+ cards in 34 of his last 43 UEFA club appointments and is averaging 4.67 per game in the Champions League this season.
- Only Barcelona have received more cards than PSG (28 in 11 games) in this season’s Champions League.
- PSG are averaging 2.9 offsides per game in the UCL – the third-highest figure in the competition.
- When these two sides met at the Parc des Princes in the group stage, PSG won 2-0 thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi.
- Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho completed 11 ‘take-ons’ in the first leg – the last player to do that in a Champions League semi-final was Lionel Messi in 2008.

Dortmund to qualify
Dortmund impressed last week with Niclas Fullkrug a constant thorn in the side of PSG’s defence.
Wingers Jadon Sancho and Karim Adeyemi caused all sorts of problems too and both will key in this game with Dortmund likely to try to hit their hosts on the break.
The pressure is on PSG and they haven’t always responded well to that in the past.
⚽ Back Dortmund to reach the final at 11/10 with Spreadex ⚽
Nuno Mendes to be carded
Left-back Mendes endured a torrid time against Jadon Sancho in the first leg and, as long as he’s not dropped, will surely try something different in the return game.
The Portuguese didn’t actually commit a foul last week but he’ll have to try to get tighter or resort to the dark arts in a bid to stop Sancho here as PSG can’t afford a repeat down that side.
With a strict referee in charge – see above – Mendes’ odds look attractive.
⚽ Bet on Mendes to be shown a card at 4/1 with bet365 ⚽
Niclas Fullkrug anytime scorer
Fullkrug was good in the air and off the ground in the initial game, scoring the only goal, and he looks a tempting price to net again.
The German international got good service from wide areas from Karim Adeyemi and Jadon Sancho and PSG keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was again looking rather suspect from high balls into the box.
Worth a punt.
⚽ Back Fullkrug to score at any time at 7/2 with bet365 ⚽
