Canelo Álvarez’s record
Álvarez arrives in Las Vegas with his professional boxing CV detailing 60 wins against two draws and a pair of defeats. The 33-year-old from Guadalajara, Mexico, is a career professional, turning pro as a teenager and working his way through the ranks to become a multi-weight world champion. He’s currently ranked as the number one fighter at super middleweight ahead of David Benavidez, with Munguia in third place.
Canelo arrives on the back of a three-fight winning streak following points victories over Gennady Golovkin, John Ryder, and Jermell Charlo. All three fights happened within 12 months, reminding fans Saul is one of the most active and fittest champions on the circuit. He loves facing the best fighters in several weights and often comes away with an impressive win. Will he continue his form against Munguia?
We last saw Álvarez in action against Charlo in September when the red-headed power-puncher scored a landslide victory with margins of 13 rounds, nine rounds, and nine rounds on the judges’ cards. It was another comfortable outing as Canelo went through the gears, building a sizeable advantage in the opening rounds and protecting it in the closing stages. That win proved once again Canelo can box as well as fight.
Jaime Munguia’s record
Jamie Munguia ducks between the ropes on fight night for the biggest challenge of his career. His professional boxing record highlights 43 wins from as many bouts, with 34 of those victories coming inside the distance. The 27-year-old from Tijuana is ranked number three in the world at the weight but knows victory on Saturday in Vegas would send him to the top of the division, passing his opponent in the process. A win would also set up the possibility of a money-spinning rematch before the end of the year.
Munguia boasts a near-80% knockout average, and he was in devastating form last time when dismantling England’s John Ryder inside nine rounds at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. That was an impressive performance, stopping Ryder comfortably inside the distance despite the Brit taking Canelo 12 rounds. Styles make fights, and how both men dealt with Ryder will have no bearing on this bout, but it does hand Jaime a serious confidence boost.
Looking at Jaime’s last five fights for a snapshot of his form heading into this contest, I can see he has won four by stoppage, including three inside the opening five rounds. Saturday represents a major step up in class, and he’s unlikely to go on the attack early against Canelo as he has too much respect for what’s coming back. A gung-ho approach could end things early, but it may not go the way Munguia has planned.
Álvarez vs Munguia betting tips and odds
In this section, I offer three betting tips for the Álvarez vs Munguia bout. I’ve gone for a good mix of value and picks that should help you land a profit. You can choose your favourite and bet at the biggest bookies now or spread your stake across several markets to increase your chances of making a profit from Saturday’s show in Vegas.
Álvarez to win at 2/11 (bet365)
I wouldn’t encourage many average boxing bettors to back Saul Álvarez to beat Jaime Munguia as the odds are very short, but this pick lays the foundations for my other picks. The pound-for-pound boxing sensation has lost only to Dmitri Bivol at light heavyweight and Floyd Mayweather Jr early in his career. He has operated at a much higher level than Munguia for most of his career, and I expect that experience to shine through.
Álvarez is the more experienced fighter at this level. He is renowned for having a great engine and can outbox opponents or stand and trade with the toughest warriors in several weights. He doesn’t have too many weaknesses in his game, and despite the price, I’ll take Canelo to win. That bet may appeal to the big hitters who like to boost their stake ahead of the most important fights.
🥊 Bet on Álvarez to win at 2/11 with bet365🥊
Álvarez KO/TKO - 2/1 (bet365)
Looking to back Canelo at greater odds? You’ll find them in the method of victory market. This option is available at all major sportsbooks mentioned on this site and ramps up the odds available on the fight-winner market. Here, you must choose a winning fighter and predict how they’ll get the result: by knockout or on points.
The obvious pick here is to track the form and back Álvarez to win on the scorecards for a third fight on the bounce, but I’m not following the trends. Instead, I envisage a bit of a war between two proud Mexicans, with neither willing to take a backward step. As any fight fan from any generation knows, things get interesting when Mexicans share a ring. Munguia will come to win, and that will leave him open to the counter, especially in the later rounds.
🥊 Bet on Álvarez to win by KO/TKO at 2/1 with bet365🥊
Álvarez in rounds 7-12 - 17/5 (BetUK)
I’ll complete the journey with a third bet on Canelo to win. After picking the champion to get the result at short odds and adding a knockout to raise the stakes, I’d go for a nice-priced winner in the group round betting. I must now pick the correct fighter, determine the method of victory, and explain how early the main event will finish. I’m going for Canelo to win in the second half of the bout, scoring a KO/TKO in rounds 7-12.
If this bout goes the way I expect it to, Álvarez will use his experience and ring IQ to build up a strong advantage on the scorecards in the early rounds. Finding himself down on the cards, Munguia must throw caution to the wind and try to stop his countryman in the second half of the contest. That will leave him open to counterpunches from Canelo, and I already know he doesn’t need a written invitation to throw bombs.
