Newcastle vs Spurs betting preview

Newcastle have started to get their season back on track in recent weeks.

Since their 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, Eddie Howe’s team have gone three matches unbeaten. They started the run with a crazy 4-3 win over West Ham on Easter Saturday, a match that required three goals in the final 15 minutes for the Toon to win.

They followed that up with a 1-1 home draw against an Everton side determined not to lose. And in their most recent outing, they won 1-0 away to Fulham.

The win against the Cottagers was probably the best result but the worst performance.

On Sunday evening, Spurs defeated Nottingham Forest 3-1 to climb into the top four at the expense of Aston Villa.

The match was bizarre. Spurs could have been out of sight after 25 minutes. But the game changed when Chris Wood equalised for the visitors against the run of play after 27 minutes.

In the end, Ange Postecoglou’s team were lucky to get to half-time with the score at one each.

Spurs put the match to bed with two goals in the opening 13 minutes of the second half.

But it was a very strange match. And if the Lilywhites perform like that for the remainder of the season, the race for a top-four place will shred the nerves of the Tottenham faithful.

Both of these teams are very unpredictable. The close odds highlight how hard this match is to call. A high-scoring thriller decided by the odd goal could be the bet here.

Newcastle vs Spurs key stats

  • Newcastle United are eighth in the Premier League table with 47 points from 31 games. The Toon are two points behind sixth-place Manchester United. Realistically, sixth is the best they can achieve.
  • Spurs are fourth in the Premier League table with 60 points from 31 matches. They are level on points with fifth-place Aston Villa. Spurs have the superior goal difference and also have a game in hand on the Midland’s team.
  • The hosts are without Callum Wilson, Joelinton, Nick Pope, Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman, Matt Targett, Tino Livramento and Kieran Trippier. Joe Willock is now also an injury concern after limping out of the Fulham win with an Achilles problem.
  • Spurs are still without long-term casualties Fraser Forster, Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon. Richarlison is set to return after missing the win over Nottingham Forest with a knee injury.
  • In their last five Premier League games, Newcastle has won three, drawn one and lost one. Spurs have an identical record.
  • Spurs lead the head-to-head with 74 wins. Newcastle have beaten the Lilywhites 61 times. There have been 34 draws.
  • In the reverse fixture this season, Spurs won 4-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in December. Last season, Newcastle did the double over Spurs, winning 2-1 in London and 6-1 at St James’ Park.

Over 49.5 total booking points (Spreadex)

Both these two teams like a yellow card or three per match. In recent weeks, one of Newcastle’s two walking yellow cards, Anthony Gordon, got sent off against West Ham. The other, Bruno Guimaraes, has nine yellows to his name this season.

For Spurs, they have seen Yves Bissouma receive two red cards this season. Expect a white-hot atmosphere at St James’ and plenty of hefty tackles to be flying in.

Alexander Isak to score (bet365)

The Swedish striker is being linked with a move to Arsenal and it’s not hard to see why.

Isak has scored in each of Newcastle’s last three matches at St James’ Park. He seems to rise to the occasion when he plays in front of his adoring home fans.

A lot of bookmakers have him at even money to find the net for a fourth successive time at St James’ Park. So we can’t miss out on odds of 13/10.

Over 4.5 goals (Sky Bet)

It’s fair to say that Newcastle have tried to tighten up defensively in recent weeks. They kept an unusual clean sheet against Fulham last weekend and only conceded a late penalty at home to Everton.

You don’t need to go back too far to find the last time the goals were flying in at both ends, though. It was the 4-3 home win over West Ham.

Spurs can’t keep a clean sheet either. They should have conceded more than once at home to Nottingham Forest last Sunday. And they probably should have scored more than the three they did.

Over 3.5 goals is less than even money. So let’s go for over 4.5 instead.
