THIS weekend, the film and entertainment worlds turn their eyes towards London as the 77th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) are broadcast live from the Royal Albert Hall.

The ceremony is the last major stop before the Academy Awards on March 10th. In this BAFTAs betting guide, I’m going to take a look through all of the BAFTAs odds and provide my thoughts on all of the major categories.

🏆 My favourite Baftas 2024 betting sites

  1. 10bet
  2. Betway
  3. Coral
  4. BetUK
  5. Ladbrokes
  6. bet365
  7. Sky Bet
  8. Star Sports
  9. BetMGM
  10. Unibet

🎞️ BAFTA Award for Best Film (2024)

The BAFTA Best Film is the biggest award handed out at the ceremony. The award was previously seen as a precursor to the Academy Awards, but in recent years, this has changed, with BAFTA only picking the same winner as the Academy once in the last decade when they backed Nomadland in 2020.

Last year’s Best Film winner was All Quiet on the Western Front, which lost out at the Oscars to Everything Everywhere All at Once.

🥇 Who is the favourite for Best Film?

Oppenheimer is rolling into this awards season full-steam ahead, and I can’t see its momentum being derailed at the BAFTAs this weekend. Christopher Nolan’s movie has picked up best film at every major ceremony, and the BAFTAs will be the last major stop on the road to Oscar glory. The film is valued at 1/7 with bet365.

Killers of the Flower Moon, the movie many thought would be Oppenhemier’s main competitor this awards season, is well off-the-pace. It is priced all the way out at 14/1 with bet365, which is the same as Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers. Poor Things and Anatomy of a Fall are at 9/1 and 10/1 with bet365, respectively. You would have to be incredibly brave to back any of these over Oppenheimer.

🎞️ BAFTA Award for Best Actor (2024)

The BAFTA award for Best Actor is very much the opposite of Best Film regarding predicting Academy Award success. Last year was the first time in a decade that the Best Actor winner at the BAFTAs didn’t go on to win Best Actor at the Academy Awards. Austin Butler won for his performance as the titular character in Elvis, while Brendan Fraser won the Oscar for The Whale.

🥇 Who is the favourite for Best Actor?

Like the Best Film race, the Best Actor award feels like a foregone conclusion. Cillian Murphy has taken home every major statuette this award season, and I can’t see any outcome other than him adding the BAFTA to that list. He is priced at 5/1 with Sky Bet.

Paul Giamatti, my personal favourite, is the second favourite at 7/2 for his magnificent performance in The Holdovers, while Bradley Cooper, the man many thought could shake up the awards race, is out at 12/1 for Maestro.

Barry Keoghan (Saltburn), Colman Domingo (Rustin), and Teo Yoo (Past Lives) make up the chasing pack at odds of 33/1, 80/1, and 100/1, respectively.

🎞️ BAFTA Award for Best Actress (2024)

The BAFTA Best Actress award has had a mixed record with the Academy Awards in recent years. Three of the last five BAFTAs have not won at the Oscars, but there was a long run of nearly a decade of matching results before that. The award is one of the highest an Actress can win, with the BAFTAs being widely considered the second most important ceremony during awards season.

🥇 Who is the favourite for Best Actress?

Emma Stone is rightfully the clear frontrunner for the Best Actress Bafta. Stone’s performance in Poor Things was my personal favourite of the year, and it deserves all of the plaudits and awards it has been getting. If you want to back her, the best odds are 1/2 with Bet10.

The biggest surprise in this category for me is that Margot Robbie has failed to pick up any awards momentum. Barbie was the movie event of the year, and while her performance was not show-stealing, I expected it to gain more traction and be a popular second choice. She is all the way out at 40/1 with bet365

Stone’s closest competitor is the German actress Sandra Huller for her terrific performance in Anatomy of a Fall. The 2023 Palme D’or winner has picked up momentum throughout the awards season, and Huller could be the night's shock. The bookies certainly think she has a chance. You can bet on Sandra Huller to win Best Actress at the BAFTAs at 11/4 with BetMGM.

🎞️ BAFTA Award for Best Director (2024)

The BAFTA Best Director reward is considered by many to be the second most important award of the evening. The BAFTAs have a habit of awarding the same winner for Best Director and Best Film, which is something the Oscars don’t tend to do as much. Last year’s winner was Edward Berger for All Quiet on the Western Front.

🥇 Who is the favourite for Best Director?

Another category dominated by Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan. Of all the awards, this one feels like the most guaranteed. Nolan is due a major awards win after being one of the best in the industry for the last two decades, and he will get his flowers on Sunday night. You can back Christopher Nolan to win Best Director at 1/12 with 10bet

🎞️ BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor (2024)

Best Supporting Actor is seen as one of the night’s major categories. Last year’s winner was Barry Keoghan for his powerful performance in The Banshees of Inesherin. He would not win at the Oscars, with Ke Huy Quan winning for Everything Everywhere All At Once. However, prior to this, BAFTA and the Academy had backed the same actor in nine out of ten years.

🥇 Who is the favourite for Best Supporting Actor?

Another category where Oppenheimer is dominant. Robert Downey Jr has swept up every major award on his way to the ceremony, and it looks like he will secure another one this weekend. If you want to back Robert Downey Jr, he is best priced at 1/8 with Bet10.

In my opinion, this category should be much closer than it is. Paul Mescal is mesmerising in All of Us Strangers, while Dominic Sessa definitely stakes a claim for his complex portrayal of the student Angus Tully in The Holdovers. These are priced at 12/1 and 28/1, respectively, with Sky Bet Respectively.

Ryan Gosling also stole the show as Ken in Barbie, but any early awards momentum he has built appears to have dropped off significantly. He is available at 11/1 with Sky Bet.

🎞️ BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress (2024)

The BAFTA award for Best Supporting Actress is often one of the night’s most unpredictable, with the body awarding a wide spectrum of different performances over the last decade. Last year’s winner was Kerry Condon for The Banshees of Inersherin, while the Academy awarded Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere All At Once.

🥇 Who is the favourite for Best Supporting Actress?

The Best Supporting Actress race is the one where my favourite film of the year is likely to be rewarded. Da’Vine Joy Randolph is the front-runner for her powerful performance as a grieving mother in The Holdovers. She can be backed at ⅛ with bet365.

Emily Blunt is the second favourite for her performance in Oppenheimer, while Sandra Huller, who is also nominated for Best Actress, sits in third place for her chilling portrayal of Hedwig Höss in the Zone of Interest. You can back either of these at 12/1 or 14/1 with Sky Bet, respectively.

⭐ Baftas betting tips to win real money

If you want to bet on this year’s BAFTAs, we recommend following some of this advice:

💡 Follow the Award Circuit

One phrase you are likely to see a lot around the BAFTAs and the upcoming Academy Awards is ‘awards circuit’. That’s because awards start being handed out for films long before the Oscar for Best Picture is rewarded.

Different film fans will have different ideas of what the first awards ceremony of the year is, with my personal choice being the Gotham Awards in November. Past this, there are countless major awards ceremonies, with many individual critics groups also holding ceremonies.

Rotten Tomatoes does an excellent job of keeping you up to date on major awards won, and these numbers are often a huge indication of the way the major shows are going to go.

💡 Bet Early

If you are someone who follows the film industry closely, I recommend getting in your bets for Best Film as early as possible. As the event gets closer, winners tend to become clearer, and odds shorten significantly.

I begin to monitor the odds for Best Film/Best Picture as early as September, looking out for films that appear to be set for theatrical runs during award season, ones that have performed exceptionally well with critics, and ones that show all of the classic signs of being a major awards contender.

💡 Study Previous Winners

So what are the classic signs of the Best Film winner, I hear you ask? This has changed in recent years, becoming harder and harder to predict. However, the BAFTAs, of all the major ceremonies, are the ones that appear to stick closer to the traditional choices.

Since 2010, we have seen two war movies win - All Quiet on the Western Front (2023) and 1917 (2019), , four movies inspired by either historic events or a memoir/biography - The King’s Speech (2010), Argo (2012), 12 Years a Slave (2013) and Roma (2018), two Westerns - The Revenant (2015) and the Power of the Dog (2021), and two films about the magic of Hollywood - The Artist (2011), La La Land (2017). This leaves Boyhood (2014), Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing Missouri (2017) and Nomadland (2020) as the only three that don’t fit a clear type unless you count movies starring Frances McDormand as their own genre now.

The film industry clearly loves awarding certain types of movies, and Oppenheimer certainly falls into at least one of those categories.

💡 Look for Upsets

Each awards body has its own quirks and differences, and as a result, there is always the chance of a major upset on the night. The BAFTAs, for obvious reasons, do lean towards British-made movies. In four of the last five years, BAFTA has chosen a different Best Film winner to what the Academy has chosen in the end, and three of those four had British production companies working on them.

Oppenheimer has plenty of British involvement, so it seems unlikely they will not back that. However, they could maybe look to cause a few upsets in the acting categories, as seen by their big support of Saltburn, a movie largely ignored by other major awards bodies.

💡 Bet Responsibly

It is very easy to see the odds attached to awards ceremonies and to chuck big amounts of cash at them. Like sports, though, nothing is ever certain with award ceremonies, with plenty of famous upsets happening on the night.

If you are going to bet on the BAFTAs, we would like to remind you to gamble responsibly and never bet more than you can afford to lose.
