Chelsea vs Wolves betting preview

I’ve written this before but I still find it hard to trust Chelsea at odds-on – and it’s been that way for some time.

Mauricio Pochettino’s appointment was supposed to right a ship which has listed badly in 2022/23 but, while there has been the odd good sign, the inconsistency has continued.

Admittedly, Chelsea have won their last four at home in the league and they’ve also progressed to the League Cup final.

Yet the confidence they should have had from recent results wasn’t evident at Anfield in midweek where they were thoroughly outplayed and could well have lost by a wider margin of 4-1.

Frankly, that’s not good enough for a squad which cost so much to assemble and the pressure remains firmly on Pochettino, the man who is supposed to be coaching his expensive stars into a cohesive unit.

In contrast, Gary O’Neil, who also only arrived in the summer, has already done that at Wolves, a team who come into this game knowing they will leapfrog Chelsea in the table if they win at Stamford Bridge.

The Old Gold have lost just one of their last eight, that coming in the 97th minute against Manchester United on Thursday.

The quick turnaround probably doesn’t help their chances but they won’t fear their hosts, having beaten them 2-1 on Christmas Eve to extend their impressive run against the Blues.

It’s now just one defeat in seven games against them and backing the visitors to avoid defeat again looks a good price in this one – read on for our best bets!

Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Wanderers key stats

  • Chelsea are the Premier League’s most-carded team this season, while Wolves sit fourth in that list.
  • Only three players have more Premier League assists this season than Wolves’ Pedro Neto (7).
  • Wolves’ injury-time defeat to Manchester United on Thursday was their first defeat in eight in all competitions.
  • Chelsea changes look assured after their 4-1 defeat at Liverpool. Christopher Nkunku scored as a sub at Anfield and is pushing for a start, as is Nicolas Jackson, now back from the Africa Cup of Nations.
  • For Wolves, left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri may replace Matt Doherty in the starting XI after his stint at AFCON.

Draw/Wolves double chance

It’s increasingly difficult to trust Chelsea at odds-on – remember they’ve won just nine of their 22 league games this season.

Here they face a side who have lost only one of their last eight and, crucially, do seem to have been moulded into a team with some sort of consistent selection.

There are just two points between the sides but that’s not reflected in the market so taking on Chelsea looks the way to go.

Malo Gusto to be carded

Gusto seems likely to return at right-back for Chelsea in this game having made his comeback from injury as a substitute at Anfield on Wednesday.

He’s been carded in four of his 10 Premier Leaue starts to date and has also picked up another card as a sub.

Here, Wolves’ dangerman Pedro Neto may well be drifting into his area of the field – at time of writing Hwang Hee-chan seems unlikely to be involved – and his form should trouble any defender.

Pedro Neto anytime assist

Neto has assisted in six of his last 10 starts, and also had another as a sub during a recent FA Cup tie. Only recently back from injury, he’s also scored in his last two games.

Arguably Wolves’ star player this season, the in-form Portuguese has what it takes to trouble this inconsistent Chelsea side.

The hosts, who shipped four goals in midweek, have already lost at home to Forest and Brentford this season and it looks worth backing Neto to deliver again at the price.
