Golden Globe tips
The 2024 Golden Globes looks set to be a night full of surprises. Here are my picks for each of the major categories in both film and TV, while also exploring the odds across the best new betting sites.
🏅 Best Female Actor: Motion Picture Drama
This year’s best actress race is hotting up. However, with two of the major places for this year’s Academy Awards finding themselves in the Musical/Comedy category, I think Lily Gladstone will win this round. Bradley Cooper’s Maestro seems to be building a little momentum, but I think it is too early for that to translate into a win for Carey Mulligan. A bet on Lily Gladstone at 1/2 with bet365 is the way to go here.
Bet on the Best Female Actor - Drama at bet365
🏅 Best Male Actor: Motion Picture Drama
The Best Male Actor race has become one of the most interesting categories this year, and I have a feeling the Golden Globes are going to add another twist to the tale. While Cillian Murphy is the favourite for his turn as the titular character in Oppenheimer, I think Bradley Cooper could snatch the globe from right underneath him. Cooper has been quietly building momentum, and as a more established A-lister, I suspect the Globes, notorious for their fame-first approach, could back him. You can bet on Bradly Cooper at 5/4 with William Hill.
Bet on the Best Male Actor - Drama at William Hill
🏅 Best Female Actor: Motion Picture Musical/Comedy
Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things is going to be one of the most dominant movies on the award circuit this year, and I can’t see anyone but Emma Stone taking home this award on Sunday. The commercial success of Barbie would suggest that Margot Robbie has some chance, but the bookies seem to think differently. Place a bet on Emma Stone in Poor Things to win at 1/3 with bet365.
Bet on the Best Female Actor - Musical/Comedy at bet365
🏅 Best Male Actor: Motion Picture Musical/Comedy
One of my favourite things about the Golden Globes is that the acting categories are split. It provides some other actors/movies with recognition that they probably won’t get at the bigger ceremonies. In this instance, I’m talking about Paul Giamatti’s sensational turn in The Holdovers. While he is going to be in the Oscar conversation, he will probably lose out to Cillian Murphy or Bradley Cooper. Fortunately, I think he will get recognised by the Globes, which could help him build some momentum. Place a bet on Paul Giamatti in The Holdovers with Unibet at 3/5.
Bet on the Best Male Actor - Musical/Comedy at Unibet
🏅 Best Male Supporting Actor
The Hollywood Foreign Press are faced with an interesting battle this weekend. They could back the more serious performance of Robert Downey Jr in Oppenheimer, or they could have some fun and reward Ryan Gosling for his role in Barbie. I have a funny feeling they may go for the latter. The Globes have a record of delivering surprise results, and the commercial success of Barbie, and the headline-grabbing potential of a Gosling win is something I think they won’t be able to resist. Robert Downey is the favourite, but I see an upset here. You can bet on Ryan Gosling to win Best Supporting Actor at 4/1 with bet365.
Bet on the Best Supporting Actor at bet365
🏅 Best Female Supporting Actor
I feel The Holdovers, despite not being a huge commercial success, could be a dark horse in this year’s award race. I’m backing them to secure a double in the acting categories this weekend, with DaVine Joy Randolph my pick in the Best Female Support Actor category. Randolph is a force of nature in the film, dominating every scene she is in with her powerful portrayal of a grieving mother. She is also the bookies’ favourite at 1/5, and I recommend backing her with BetMGM.
Bet on the Best Supporting Actress at BetMGM
🏅 Best Director: Motion Picture Drama
I suspect this year’s award season will be dominated by the battle between Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon. I think the former has more momentum right now, and the Best Director Category is where it will land its first major blow on the road to the Oscars. Christopher Nolan is currently priced as the overwhelming favourite at 1/6 with bet365, and I think this is a bet worth placing.
Bet on the Best Director - Drama at bet365
🏅 Best Motion Picture: Drama
As I’ve already mentioned, the key battle this award season is going to be between Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon. While it is nice to see interesting movies like Anatomy of a Fall and Zone of Interest receiving recognition, they have no chance of winning. A bet on Oppenheimer at 1/4 with BetUK is my pick.
Bet on the Best Motion Picture - Drama at BetUK
🏅 Best Picture: Musical/Comedy
The only film that feels like it has any chance of breaking the race between Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flowers Moon is Poor Things. Yorgos Lathimos’s movie is likely to be too out there to win at the Academy Awards, but the split categories at the Globes give it the chance to win big at least once. Place a bet on Poor Things to win Best Picture Musical/Comedy at 11/10 with William Hill.
Bet on the Best Picture - Musical/Comedy at William Hill
🏅 Best Score
There have been some fantastic scores this year. The hypnotic, maddening music from Jerskin Fendrix in Poor Things is rightly up there as a top contender. However, I think this is another category where Oppenheimer will score a significant win. Ludwig Gorranson’s rousing score was essential to the experience, and we recommend backing it at 2/9 with Sky Bet.
Bet on the Best Score at Sky Bet
🏅 Best Female Actor: Television Drama
I think if there is any chance of Succession not securing a clean sweep, it is in this category. Sarah Snook is currently the favourite for her turn as Shiv Roy, but Belle Ramsey, who is my choice for my breakout star of 2023, could cause an upset on the night. They are nominated for their performance in The Last Of Us, which, in any other year, would be cleaning up at an awards ceremony. I will stick with my gut and back Snook, but this will be an envelope opening I eagerly anticipate.
Bet on the Best Female Actor - Television Drama at Sky Bet
🏅 Best Female Actor: Television Musical/Comedy
I am delighted the main acting categories are split because it means that The Bear will get the recognition it deserves this weekend. Whether or not The Bear is actually a comedy is a totally different discussion. This is one of the categories with several of my favourite performances of the year in. Ayo Edibiri is exceptional in The Bear, and I hope she wins at 5/6. However, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Quinta Bruson sneak in for her performance in Abbott Elementary. Abbott Elementary has proven time and time again to be an awards darling, and Bruson is undeniably its star. I am going with the bookies and backing Edebiri to win at 5/6 with Sky Bet.
Bet on the Best Female Actor - Television Musical/Comedy at Sky Bet
🏅 Best Male Actor: Television Musical/Comedy
Talking of breakout stars from The Bear, Jeremy Allan White is the beating heart of the show, and I am not surprised to see he is the heavy favourite to secure Best Male Actor on Sunday. White has had an amazing 2023, and with his turn in The Iron Claw earning him plaudits on the big screen at the moment, I can see him being a major player in 2024. That starts with him winning the Best Male Actor Golden Globe on Sunday. He is priced at 4/1 with Sky Bet.
Bet on the Best Male Actor - Television Musical/Comedy at Sky Bet
🏅 Best Male Actor: Television Drama
Asking me to pick between my favourite performance from the three male leads in Succession this year is extremely difficult, but that is essentially what the Hollywood Foreign Press will be doing this weekend. Keiran Culkin, Jeremy Strong, and Brian Cox are all nominated. Potentially ruining the party is Pedro Pascal for his turn in The Last of Us, and he is the second favourite. Culkin is the favourite for a reason, though, and after four exceptional seasons as Roman, I think it is time to give him his flowers. Place a bet on Kieran Culkin to win for Succession at 8/13.
Bet on the Best Male Actor - Television Drama at Sky Bet
🏅 Best Series: Drama
I think this is the easiest award to pick of the night. Succession has been the benchmark for TV over the last few years, and its final season was nothing but a triumph. The Last of Us, the second favourite, will have more opportunities to win in the future, while I can’t help but feel The Crown is there on the strength of previous showings. Anything other than Succession winning would be a massive shock. You can back it at 2/7 with Sky Bet.
Bet on the Best Series - Drama at Sky Bet
🏅 Best Series: Musical/Comedy
The Bear was one of my favourite shows of 2023, and it seems I’m not alone in that respect. While Barry bowed out on a high and would be a worthy winner every other year, I feel it has been lost in the shuffle a little this year. Ted Lasso, which has been nominated for every season and never won, will continue its losing streak, with the show’s final season receiving a fairly tepid reception. I can’t see past a win for The Bear in this category at 8/13 with Sky Bet.
Bet on the Best Series - Musical/Comedy at Sky Bet
