Luton vs Chelsea betting preview
Big-spending Chelsea continue to frustrate their fans, particularly those most loyal who hit the road to follow them.
The Blues head into this game on a run of four straight league defeats – their worst run in 23 years.
It wasn’t supposed to be this way after Todd Boehly bought the club and duly splashed the cash and after a pretty miserable first half of the season was added to last term’s bottom-half finish, you wonder what lies ahead in January, both in terms of new players and, potentially, a new manager.
It’s certainly fair to say that current boss Mauricio Pochettino needs a result here but, with his side struggling to keep clean sheets, it’s far from guaranteed, despite their odds-on status.
Luton have collected nine points from the last 18 available and that total may well have been more but for Tom Lockyer’s awful on-field collapse.
Perhaps galvanised by that incident, the Hatters have won two in a row since then with Newcastle beaten last time out at Kenilworth Road.
They head into this one knowing a win would lift them out of the relegation zone – at least for a few hours – and such a result should not be ruled out. Indeed, this appears to be where the potential value lies.
Ross Barkley has been in sparkling form, while Andros Townsend is beginning to hit former heights having returned after 18 months out of the game.
Absentees at the back – notably Lockyer but also Issa Kabore – are a concern but only increase the chances of one of our bets landing.

Luton/Draw double chance (Spreadex)
In case you hadn’t noticed, Chelsea aren’t exactly known for their consistency – and it’s very much a long-term trend.
In the here and now, they’ve now lost four on the spin away from home and quite why anyone would want to back them at 1/2 at Kenilworth Road is beyond me.
Luton have won three of their last six to edge close to a position of safety and look good value to avoid to defeat on their home patch.
⚽ Back Luton/Draw double chance at 31/20 at Spreadex ⚽
Ross Barkley to be carded (bet365)
Barkley has been lauded for his recent displays and it’s fair to say he’s been a key reason behind Luton’s recent revival.
Here, he comes up against his former club and certainly the home contingent will be expecting him to shine and pull them to some sort of result.
That will add pressure to a player who has been booked in three of his last seven games so, given the circumstances, the 5/1 being dangled about him picking up another card looks worth taking.
Admittedly, the referee – Paul Tierney – could be better for cards as he’s below the league average but that feels built into the price.
⚽ Bet on Barkley to be carded at 5/1 at bet365 ⚽
Both teams to score (Sky Bet)
This bet has now landed in eight of both sides’ last 10 games in all competitions.
Luton, who have the second-worst expected goals against figure, have kept just one clean sheet all season.
Meanwhile, Chelsea, who have the second-highest expected-goals tally, have only kept out rock-bottom Sheffield United in the league since October 2.
⚽ Back both teams to score at 8/11 at Sky Bet ⚽
