Newcastle vs PSG betting preview

Newcastle were happy enough with their opening result on their return to the Champions League last month – a goalless draw at AC Milan could well prove crucial come matchday six.

However, the manner of the performance was criticised in many circles for being too defensive and makes you wonder how Eddie Howe will approach a game against a PSG side who, while much changed from last season, remain a big attacking threat.

While Lionel Messi and Neymar left in the summer, Kylian Mbappe (eight goals in seven games this season) remains and he’s been joined in the forward line by France team-mates Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele under new boss Luis Enrique.

After a shaky start to the season which brought defeats to Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton, Newcastle have managed five clean sheets on the spin so it would be no surprise to see Howe prioritise keeping PSG out, especially given he’s now missing key defender Sven Botman.

Given the quality in PSG’s attack, they will look to prey on that altered defence – Jamaal Lascelles is set to play in Botman’s position – while you have to think they can enjoy some success against Dan Burn at left-back.

That’s primarily what puts me off backing under 2.5 goals – a bet which looks to have potential given PSG also come into this on a good defensive run having not conceded in their last three.

Still, they’ve had their problems keeping sides out away from home in this competition (see below) and so 11/10 in that market is swerved in favour of the away win at 13/8.

With Newcastle lacking experience of this sort of occasion and PSG having it in bucketloads, take the visitors to leave with all three points.

After a few days in which referees have made plenty of headlines, it may also pay to play the cards market – read on for why a few yellows may be shown at St James’ Park.

📝 Newcastle vs PSG key stats

Let’s take a look at some of the key stats surrounding Newcastle and PSG:

  • Newcastle have kept five clean sheets in a row in all competitions, while PSG are currently on a run of three such games.
  • However, PSG have conceded in each of their last 13 Champions League away matches.
  • Anthony Gordon has been carded in five of his eight starts for Newcastle this season.
  • Sven Botman has joined Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock on the Newcastle injury list. Jamaal Lascelles is his likely replacement at centre-back, as he was at the weekend. Joelinton and Callum Wilson are both doubtful.
  • PSG have Marco Asensio, Presnel Kimpembe and Nuno Mendes all ruled out.

Newcastle vs PSG best bets

PSG to win

Yes, Newcastle have kept five successive clean sheets but PSG remain one of Europe’s most vibrant attacking forces, led by world-beater Kylian Mbappe.

Losing Sven Botman is a major blow for the hosts who now face a defensive reshuffle – Jamaal Lascelles is expected to play at centre-back. He’s started just two games since early March and keeping PSG out will be a bit different to denying Burnley, as he did on Saturday.

Newcastle were dominated by Milan in Italy on matchday one and while they have home advantage here, the top seeds in the group looks capable of winning this at a nice price.

Dan Burn to be carded

With Istvan Kovacs appointed as referee, there looks to be a good chance of cards in this contest.

The Romanian has shown at least four cards in 22 of his last 30 UEFA club appointments.

The pace and trickery in PSG’s attack could well trouble Dan Burn, who is expected to stay at left-back where he will likely to be up against Ousmane Dembele – the second most frequent dribbler in Ligue 1 so far this season.

The lanky Burn looks awkward at the best of times and it’s not hard to see him struggling to contain the Frenchman.

Anthony Gordon to be carded

Gordon was known for his petulance at Everton and Eddie Howe is yet to shake that out of him at Newcastle.

He’s already earned a domestic suspension having accrued five yellows in just seven Premier League starts.

Ref Kovacs isn’t one to mess around so any nonsense here, in a match set to be played in a fervent atmosphere, could well see another card brandished.
