Real Madrid vs Chelsea betting preview

Well this feels familiar… Real Madrid and Chelsea lock horns in the final eight of the Champions League for the second-successive season. In fact, it's the third consecutive campaign the pair have met in the knockout stages with the winner having lifted the trophy on both occasions.

But unlike previous meetings, Chelsea enter this one on a downward trajectory. The Blues are winless in their last four Premier League matches, including Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Wolves. They've failed to register a goal in over 270 minutes of action and sit a full 17 points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

Frank Lampard will be the third Blues manager to take charge of the club in this season’s competition, following the departures of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter. But there are reasons to be cheerful given Chelsea have lost only one of their last nine Champions League knockout-stage matches away to Spanish opposition.

Real Madrid remain as unpredictable as ever. The Spanish heavyweights followed their 4-0 demolition of arch-rivals Barcelona with a 3-2 home defeat to Villarreal over the weekend. Carlo Ancelotti's side are 13 points off the LaLiga leaders with 10 matches remaining, and will focus their efforts on another European title.

The reigning champions have lost just one of their last 10 in the Champions League, and have put together a winning sequence of three, and have also progressed from nine of their two-legged knockout ties against English opposition with their latest a 6-2 aggregate win over Liverpool.

Real Madrid vs Chelsea best bets

Real Madrid to win

Real Madrid and knockout football. There aren't many better combinations. Los Blancos have won a staggering 14 European and Champions League titles, including four since 2016.

Ancelotti is no stranger to success either. The stylish Italian is the only coach to have won the Champions League four times. Yes, Real Madrid have been a touch underwhelming on the domestic front, but they come alive in Europe.

And we expect them to secure an important first-leg advantage heading back to Stamford Bridge on April 18. Chelsea have struggled to score in recent weeks, failing to find the net in three and managed just a single effort on target against relegation-threatened Wolves.

The same cannot be said for the hosts, who've managed 12 goals in their last three at the Bernabeu.

Benzema at the double

Karim Benzema won the Ballon d'Or for his amazing displays in the Champions League last season. The Frenchman scored hat-tricks in the last-16 second leg against Paris Saint-Germain and in the quarter-final first leg against Chelsea.

And the bad news for Frank Lampard's side is that he's found his shooting boots again. The 35-year-old has seven goals in his last five appearances, including back-to-back hat-tricks against Valladolid and Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.

Benzema has only blanked once in three games against Chelsea, and we expect the forward to fill his boots again.

Vini on target

Another of Carlo Ancelotti's in-form players is Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian has bagged 21 goals and provided 15 assists in 44 appearances this season.

Six of those goals and three assists have arrived in the Champions League, giving him the fourth best record in this season's competition behind Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Kylian Mbappe.

The winger has averaged 2.6 efforts on goal in LaLiga, but that average rises to 3.8 shots on goal in the Champions League. Chelsea, meanwhile, have given up 34 shots on goal in their last three away matches.
