Julia Atherley
Julia Atherley is Home Affairs Correspondent at The Sun, having joined the company in 2020. She specialises in stories on immigration, justice and crime. This year she has reported on the continuing small boats crisis in the English Channel with record numbers crossing in dangerous dinghies. She has a focus on stories about the criminal justice system, including bringing in exclusives about Labour's early release scheme, which will see thousands of prisoners let out early from overcrowded jails. Earlier this year she revealed that murderer Jordan McSweeney had been charged with another crime behind bars after allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a prison officer. She routinely reports from inside Britain's prisons providing exclusive insights into the reality of the justice system. Julia has covered stories of national significance for The Sun including the Grenfell Tower Inquiry and the Infected Blood Inquiry. Other previous stories include revealing Putin’s secret mega yacht which was hidden in Italy and reporting on the crossbow intruder at Windsor Castle on Christmas Day. She has led multiple campaigns including The Sun's fight to keep British Airways killer Robert Brown behind bars. She has a gold standard journalist qualification and a first class degree from Durham University. She was invited as a member of The Media Leader's Future 100 Club, class of 2022.
