HIT drama Waterloo Road has been axed by the BBC after its tenth series.
Beeb bosses will close the school doors for the final time in 2015 to make
room for new dramas in the coveted 8pm slot.
Filming on the last series has already begun, and the final 20 episodes will
begin airing in the autumn.
Waterloo Road launched in 2006 and followed the lives of stars and pupils at a
troubled comprehensive school.
It was originally set in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, before it moved to
Greenock in Scotland in 2012.
It’s current crop of stars include Laurie Brett, Angus Deayton, Melanie Hill
and Zoe Lucker with past characters played by Robson Green Angela Griffin,
Denise Welch, Jill Halfpenny and Chelsee Healey.
Despite it’s long run and consistent viewing figures, a tweet on the BBC One
website said: “We’re incredibly proud of the show but believe it has reached
the end of its lifecycle.”
A statement read: “On BBC One it’s important to make room for new drama and we
are committed to commissioning new drama series for 8pm.
“There are some really exciting ideas currently in development but
nothing to confirm yet.”
