DAVID Cameron has agreed to talks over rip-off hospital car parking charges –
in a major Sun campaign breakthrough.
Tory MP Rob Halfon will raise the concerns of tens of thousands of Brits in a
showdown next Monday.
The Sun slammed hospitals for fleecing patients, family and friends with
exorbitant fees in our “Rip-off Britain” campaign in March.
Last month we revealed that hospitals are still charging up to £500 a week
despite a vow from Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to get tough with NHS
Trusts.
Mr Halfon urged Sun readers to send in as many details of hospital rip-offs as
possible – so he can show them to the PM.
He said: “It is great that David Cameron has agreed to a meeting to discuss
the great hospital car park rip-off.
“The more people who send in their stories, the more we can put pressure on
our hospitals to stop this stealth tax on the most vulnerable.”
More than 100 MPs are also backing calls for fees to be cut – fuelling hopes
the issue will be debated in the Commons.
Mr Halfon last month revealed that the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, North
West London charges £504 for parking.
Three-quarters of hospitals across the country rake in up to £4 and as much as
£12 for four hours.
The Department of Health moans that scrapping parking charges would cost the
NHS £200million.
But Mr Halfon insists the savings can be found elsewhere, such as using
cheaper generic medicines. The MP has previously campaigned against rip-off
petrol prices and bingo duty.
