BARACK Obama dropped the mic – literally – when he ribbed Donald Trump and the
Democrat presidential candidates during a speech at a journalists’ dinner
last night.
In the traditional address at the White House Correspondents’ Association
dinner he took shots at the Republican frontrunner’s foreign policy and
business acumen.
He also surprised some by mocking the efforts of Hillary Clinton to appeal to
younger voters.
After skewering the brash billionaire back in 2011 when Trump had attended the
event, Obama had hoped he would be there for another roasting.
But he did not let Trump’s absence stop him from making jokes.
He said: “I am a little hurt he’s not here tonight.
“We had so much fun the last time.
“And it is surprising — you have a room full of reporters, celebrities,
cameras.
“And he says no.
“Is this dinner too tacky for The Donald? What could he be possibly doing
instead? Eating a Trump Steak?
“Tweeting out insults to Angela Merkel? What’s he doing?”

He then made a jokey reference to how Trump used to own the Miss Universe
beauty pageant.
“The Republican establishment is incredulous that he is the most likely
nominee.
“Incredulous! Shocking! They say Donald lacks the foreign policy experience to
be president but, in fairness, he has spent years meeting with leaders from
around the world.
“Miss Sweden. Miss Argentina. Miss Azerbaijan,” he said.
Not content to leave it there, Obama also managed to make a joke about
Guantanamo Bay at Trump’s expense.
He joked: “And there’s one area where Donald’s experience could be invaluable
and that’s closing Guantanamo because Trump knows a thing or two about
running waterfront properties into the ground.”
Obama also took shots at the Democratic race, telling Bernie Sanders, who was
in attendance: “You look like a million bucks.
“Or to put it in terms you’ll understand, you look like 37,000 donations of
$27 each.”
With Sanders winning widespread support from young Democrat voters, Obama
mocked the attempts of rival Hillary Clinton to try and appeal to young
people.
He said: “You’ve got to admit it though, Hillary trying to appeal to young
voters is a little bit like your relative who just signed up for Facebook.
“Dear America, did you get my poke? Is it appearing on your wall? I’m not sure
I’m using this right. Love, Aunt Hillary.’
“It’s not entirely persuasive.”
But he made it clear who he thought would be the eventual winner of the
presidential election in November, saying: “Next year at this time,
someone else will be standing here in this very spot.
“And it’s anyone’s guess who she will be.”
Obama ended his speech by saying: “And with that, I just have two more
words to say — Obama out.”
Bringing two fingers up to his lips he then used his other hand to lift his
microphone up in front of him before dropping it in a dramatic fashion.
This was a reference to when performers intentionally “drop the mic”
to show they have done a great performance.
For him, this was clearly him alluding to his years in the White House as well
as the speech.
CNN reports the dinner is Washington DC’s yearly opportunity to pretend it is
with-it – and reporters mingle with Hollywood stars, top sports figures,
lawmakers, Government officials and business leaders.
