Shot wife tells of gun husband's cry

A HAIRDRESSER told yesterday how her crazed husband yelled “Rachel, I love
you” after blasting her with a shotgun.

Rachel Williams, 39 — whose left leg was shattered in the horror two
weeks ago — said: “I’ve no doubt he came to kill me.”

Darren Williams, 45, also wounded two elderly customers in the attack at a
salon in Newport, South Wales. He was later found hanged in nearby woods.

Mum-of-two Rachel had tried to wrestle the double-barrelled weapon from her
estranged husband. But he hit her to the floor and opened fire.

She recalled: “I pulled my legs up towards my chest. If I hadn’t have been
hit in the leg I wouldn’t be here now.

“The second time he fired he said, ‘Rachel, I love you’ but that shot went
around the room.

“I know he had come to kill me. I believe it was one bullet for me and one for
him.”

Lorry driver Williams — once jailed for possessing illegal weapons —
was having problems dealing with the break-up of the five-year marriage.

Rachel, who is still recovering in hospital after an eight-hour operation to
save her leg, said: “I knew they wouldn’t find him alive.

“He told me days before. ‘By hook or by crook I will kill myself’.”

Rachel is having surgery to rebuild her limb and is expected to remain in
hospital for another month.

Customer Connie Evans, 92, had 19 shotgun pellets removed by surgeons. The
other victim suffered minor wounds.
