George Michael airlifted to hospital after rush-hour crash

POP star George Michael was airlifted to hospital after suffering head
injuries in a horror crash on the M1 at rush-hour.

The ex-Wham! singer, 49, was bleeding heavily as he was pulled from the
wrecked £70,000 Range Rover in which he was a passenger.

Paramedics strapped him to a spinal board to keep him still before a
helicopter flew him to a specialist trauma unit for tests.

He remained in hospital last night, more than 24 hours later.

A source said: “He was taken to hospital on the board. He couldn’t move and
was bleeding heavily. It clearly wasn’t a minor shunt. But he’s had the best
emergency treatment and is recovering well.”

The accident — at the Junction 6A intersection with the M25 near Welwyn, Herts
— shut the northbound M1 for an hour, leaving vehicles queuing for miles.

Southbound was closed for 30 minutes to let the air ambulance land and take
off. Police say Thursday evening’s incident is “unexplained” and are
investigating. But George’s aides and his partner last night tried to
downplay the latest in his long line of road accidents.

PR adviser Connie Filippello insisted no other vehicles were involved — even
though CCTV footage clearly shows more than that at the scene.

She added: “He’s being treated for superficial cuts and bruises but is fine.
We have no further comment.”

Boyfriend Fadi Fawaz, 39, said over the intercom at George’s mansion in
Highgate, North London: “He’s perfectly fine. Of course I was worried. But
I’ve spoken to him and he’s good.

“He suffered a few bruises but it’s nothing to worry about. He’s due out very
soon but I don’t know when. I’ve no idea what happened. I wasn’t there.”

The Range Rover driver was unhurt. It was not clear last night if anyone else
had been in the car. But the ambulance service made clear how concerned 999
crews were about George’s condition.

George Michael performs during the Closing Ceremony at the 2012 Summer Olympics, Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, in London.

A spokesman said: “He was immobilised on a spinal board as a precaution, then
flown to a specialist trauma centre for tests after a head injury. The
injuries are deemed non-life threatening.”

Cops added: “The exact circumstances are unclear. Until further investigation,
it would be inappropriate to comment.”

The crash marks yet another dramatic scare for the star. Last year he revealed
he almost died from pneumonia in 2011.
