Becky Watts killers Nathan Matthews and Shauna Hoare found guilty

Step-brother and his girlfriend plotted sex-fuelled kidnap

THE evil step-brother of schoolgirl Becky Watts was found guilty of her murder today.

Nathan Matthews, 28, suffocated the 16-year-old then sawed up her body in a sex-fuelled kidnap plot with girlfriend Shauna Hoare.

The twisted killer, who was obsessed with petite teenage girls, denied murder claiming he killed her by accident in a prank gone wrong.

It forced Becky’s family to hear gruesome evidence about her death during the four-week trial, including how her body was mutilated and was covered in 40 bruises from her desperate struggle for life.

Hoare was also found guilty of perverting justice and possessing a prohibited stun gun, which Matthews had admitted.

Cheers rang out from family members in the public gallery as the verdicts were returned. Hoare stared blankly forward while Matthews did not lift his head.

Becky, whose dad Darren Galsworthy is married to Matthews’ mum Anjie, vanished from her home in Bristol on February 19 sparking a huge search.

Matthews had throttled her in her bedroom then bundled her into the back of his Vauxhall Zafira. He later sliced up her body in the bath with a power saw bought from B&Q.

He and Hoare were also seen on CCTV buying bin bags and rubber gloves in the days after Becky’s disappearance — but she claimed she had no idea the corpse was dismembered in her bathroom.

Eight body parts wrapped in clingfilm were found in a neighbour’s shed 80 yards away from the couple’s home on March 3.

Donovan Demetrius, 28, and James Ireland, 23, were found not guilty of assisting an offender, a charge already admitted by Dovonan’s brother Karl and his girlfriend Jaydene Parsons, 23.

The trial judge, Mr Justice Dingemans, said he would pass sentence on Friday.

Matthews and Hoare planned to kidnap 5ft 1in Becky in a plot fuelled by a shared sexual interest in petite teenagers, the trial heard.

They took a stun gun, handcuffs, tape and a large bag to her home on the day she died.

Prosecutor William Mousley QC told the jury: “In addition to their apparent dislike of Becky, there is good reason to believe there was also a sexual motive behind the scheme, arising from a shared unnatural interest in attractive teenage females.”

A post mortem examination found Becky was suffocated during a “violent struggle” and suffered 15 stab wounds and a slash across her stomach after death.

Mr Mousley said: “She was suffocated, despite her fighting for her life.

“There followed a deliberate, carefully planned and grotesquely executed plan to cover up her killing.”

Mr and Mrs Galsworthy sobbed and clutched other members of the family as the killers were found guilty.

Becky’s best friend Courtney Bicker, grandfather John Galsworthy, uncle Sam Galsworthy, brother Daniel Watts and aunt Sarah Broom were also in the public gallery, wearing blue ribbons in her memory.

Outside court a statement read on the family’s behalf said: “It has been difficult and at times deeply distressing for us to listen to the evidence in this case.

“Not only the detail of her death and what happened afterwards but also having to listen to how some people described Becky.

“We loved Becky and knew her better than most. We can tell you that she was a beautiful, happy, funny, feisty, caring, loyal and witty girl.

“She was like a tornado, hurricane and sunbeam all at once. She came into your life and made you feel alive.”

Detective Superintendent Mike Courtiour said Becky was “a typical teenager who was well-loved and, like most teenagers, had many plans and hopes for the future”.

He said: “Matthews and Hoare concocted a heinous plan to kidnap his step-sister Becky for reasons they have failed to fully disclose other than she occasionally left items on the floor which could have tripped up Matthews’ mother.

“The body of evidence, however, has suggested a more sinister motive relating to their deep-seated hatred for Becky and their twisted sexual desires.

“On February 19 this year, the pair carried out their macabre plan which resulted in the murder of Becky at her home in Crown Hill, Bristol.

“They then took her body back to their home in Cotton Mill Lane and began the horrific and grotesque task of dismembering her over a matter of days.

“It’s virtually impossible to comprehend this level of depravity.”

He added: “Although he admitted manslaughter, Matthews has never taken full responsibility for his actions and he has forced Becky’s family and friends to endure the additional trauma of a lengthy and extremely distressing trial.

“Hoare has never admitted her role in any capacity, demonstrating her cold-blooded and calculating nature.”
