SIX men have been charged with murdering the victim of a horrific gang rape
that sparked protests across India.
It came hours after the 23-year-old medical student died in a Singapore
hospital where she had been flown for treatment on Boxing Day.
The woman was severely beaten and raped on a bus in the capital New Delhi
almost two weeks ago.
Mount Elizabeth Hospital chief executive Kelvin Loh said: “She was courageous
in fighting for her life for so long but the trauma to her body was too
severe to overcome.”
The case sparked mass demonstrations about the lack of safety for women in
India.
Officials have also been accused of belittling rape victims and not taking
complaints of violence against women seriously.
Two cops in Punjab have been fired following the suicide of an 18-year-old
girl a month after telling police she was the victim of another gang rape.
