Leonardo DiCaprio FINALLY wins first Oscar…while Spotlight bags Best Film

Kate Winslet is in tears as pal wins, while Sam Smith and Alicia Vikander also bag awards

LEONARDO DiCaprio beamed with joy as he finally bagged his elusive first Oscar
at tonight’s star-studded ceremony.

The star, 41, was named Best Actor for his gruelling role in The Revenant
after five previous nominations.

Leo beat Brit boy – and last year’s winner – Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl),
Irish star Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Matt Damon (The Martian) and
Bryan Cranston (Trumbo).

He left his former Titanic co-star and close pal Kate Winslet in tears as he
finally got his hands on the prize, 22 years after his first nomination.

Leo thanked his “brother” and co-star Tom Hardy in the speech, as
well as his parents and friends, saying: “I love you dearly”.

But the political star also used his big moment to campaign for the world to
do more to combat climate change.

He said: “Climate change is real. It is happening right now. It is the
most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work
collectively together and stop procrastinating.

“We need to support leaders who do not support big corporations, but
speak to humanity.

“For our children’s children and for those people out there whoe voices
have been drowned out by the politics of greed.

The Revenant filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu was named Best Director,
but the film lost out to Spotlight in the coveted Best Picture category.

The Revenant took home three awards in total, but it trailed behind Mad Max:
Fury Road, which was the night’s big winner with six Oscars.

Brie Larson was named Best Actress for her role in Room, while Alicia Vikander
beat Brit favourite Kate (Steve Jobs) to Best Supporting Actor for The
Danish Girl.

She said: “To my mum and dad – thank you for giving me the belief that
anything can happen. Even though I would never have believed this.”

British star Mark Rylance pulled off an upset after beating Creed star
Sylvester Stallone to Best Supporting Actor for Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of
Spies.

Sam Smith was another British success story.

He won Best Original Song for his Bond theme Writing’s On The Wall, beating
Lady Gaga and The Weeknd.

He dedicated his emotional speech to the LGBT community, saying: “I read
an article that said no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar, and if this is
the case, and even if it’s not, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT
community all around the world.

“I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand
together as equals one day.”

However, Sam is not the first openly gay star to win – fellow musician Elton
John won Best Original Song for The Lion King’s Can You Feel The Love
Tonight in 1995.

Host Chris Rock made the Oscars audience cringe and cackle by tackling the row
over the lack of black nominees.

He said: “The real question everyone wants to know is, ‘Is Hollywood
racist?’ You gotta go at that at the right way. Is it burning cross racist?
it’s a different type of racist.

“You’re damn right Hollywood’s racist, but it’s the racist we’ve become
accustomed to.”
