BEYONCE has angered fans who have accused her of cultural appropriation in
Coldplay’s new video.
The superstar, 34, plays a Bollywood actress in the clip for Hymn for the
Weekend – on which she also sings – and has been slated for dressing up as
an Indian actress.
In the video she has henna tattoos covering her hands, wears saris and makes
kathak hand gestures – linked to a classical northern Indian dance.
But at other points she bares her chest in a plunging dress while wearing a
floral crown.
And fans have taken to Twitter to argue over the clip, which some believe is
disrespectful to the Desi cultures of south Asia.
One user @hedamila wrote: “beyoncé is wrong and her appropriation is
super offensive to some people end of story.”
And @solocalum tweeted: “Beyoncé and Coldplay appropriated the desi
culture yikes.”
Another angry fan added: “thank you @Beyonce for being just as ignorant
and f**king stupid as the s***ty band you did it for.”
However, others have also accused Coldplay of being responsible as they came
up with the video concept.
Tweeter @blackwidowmami said: “This is really all Coldplay’s fault
obviously and Beyoncé should’ve walked away when they pulled the outfit out.”
The video – which was shot in Mumbai, India, and directed by Ben Mor – sees
the band’s frontman Chris Martin walking through the streets of the city
before entering a cinema where he watches a film starring Beyonce in
traditional Indian attire.
