This railcard trick will cut 30% off your ticket cost… but there’s a catch

MANY a young commuter will be all too familiar with the dread that comes with
turning 26 – it’s goodbye to your 16-25 rail card and hello to full
fares… until you’re 60, anyway.

However, if you haven’t yet reached this expensive milestone, there’s still
hope.

Simply buy or renew your pass the day before your 26 birthday and you’ll gain
an extra year of cheaper travel – effectively making it a 16-26 railcard.

For those who are particularly crafty, you can plan further ahead, but you’ll
have to be quick.

You can get an extra three years if you buy your new pass the day before your
24th birthday – meaning your pass won’t expire until the day before
your 27th. Result.

If you’ve passed the grand old age of 25, fear not – there is another easy
hack that can slash the price of your commute by up to a third.

Look into purchasing a Network Railcard – you can apply for one whatever your
age and there are some great savings to be made by doing so.

The Network Railcard is an alternative discount card which will give you a
third off most rail fares for journeys in the Network Rail area – but it can
also save you money on trips around London.

The specified zone covers London through to Cambridge, Margate, Dover,
Hastings, the majority of the south coast, and even parts of Worcestershire
and Exeter.

The railcard costs £30 and lasts for 12 months and up to three adults who
travel with you can also reap the discounts.

However, there is a slight catch, which could pose a problem to early morning
commuters – the card cannot be used before 10am Monday to Friday, unlike a
standard railcard which can be used 24/7.
