MP with footwear addiction bullies shopkeeper

Labour’s Angela Rayner uses Commons notepaper to write shop complaint

A STAR Wars-mad MP desperate for a pair of special edition shoes used “the Force” on a shop boss when she failed to get them.

Angela Rayner fired off a letter on Commons notepaper warning his “poor customer service” would “cost him”.

The row started after the Labour MP, who admits to blowing thousands on shoes, spent hours trying to get a £195 pair with novelty four-inch R2-D2 heels.

Ms Rayner, 35, claimed she ordered a pair in advance but when she called on launch day the shop had sold out.

She fired off an angry letter to the manager of the Brighton branch of Irregular Choice — and sent a copy to his boss at head office.

Manager Daniel Theophanides, 32, was so shaken he phoned around to find a pair and found some in her size in China.

But when he rang to tell her the good news he says she “ranted” at him then hung up, not giving him the chance to explain.

The Ashton-under-Lyne MP now faces a carpeting from Parliamentary authorities for misuse of Commons notepaper, which should only be for official business.

Ms Rayner, whose eye-catching footwear has earned her the nickname “Shoebacca” after Star Wars character Chewbacca, claimed she spent “hours” on the phone chasing her order.

She wrote: “I have been a customer of yours for several years and have bought many thousands of pounds worth of shoes.

“This is not the sort of service I expect. I have only ever bought your shoes and I am loath to do so again or recommend your shoes to others.

“I am writing to let you know that treating customers in that way will only cost you more in the long term.”

She even included a print-out of her previous purchases, which include a £100 pair with a lamb-shaped heel and £115 Squeezy shoes with teddy bear heels.

But last night boss Daniel insisted he had taken no advance orders for the R2-D2 shoes, and there had been queues outside all five Irregular Choice stores for them.

He said: “I was personally very shocked. It was the wording of her letter on House of Commons headed paper. I wouldn’t dream of writing a letter of complaint on company notepaper.

“The customer believed she was on a pre-order list but we had a strict rule the shoes went to customers who came through the doors.

“But I decided I would put a call in and see what I could do. I found a pair in a shop in China.

“But when she returned my call, she didn’t give me a chance to tell her. She said, ‘It’s clear you’re not going to listen to me’ and hung up.”

Ms Rayner then took to Twitter to attack the store. In one tweet, she said: “Shame they sold my pair after I waited months on their list & been a customer 4 years. Poor customer service.”

Last night a spokesman for Ms Rayner said there had been a misunderstanding. He added: “There appears to have been a breakdown in communication between Angela and the shop, which is regrettable.”
