THE Great British Bake Off winner has sparked outrage for appearing not to use
free range eggs in the Queen’s 90th birthday cake.
Nadiya Hussain baked a spectacular orange drizzle cake, which Queen Elizabeth
II carefully cut into on Thursday.
However, the star baker’s ingredients have been called in to question after
she posted a photo of what look like caged-hen eggs on Twitter.
Nadiya – who won GBBO in 2015 – chose to whip up an orange-flavoured cake fit
for royalty, but Twitter users have questioned whether the ingredients she
used were of sufficient regal quality.
On the morning of the festivities, the 31-year-old posted a photo on Twitter
of her kitchen counter piled high with baking ingredients.
Alongside an open pack of sugar and under a huge bag of oranges is a carton of
eggs in plastic packaging generally used to carry supermarket value or basic
ranges.
She captioned it: “I found the eggs under the reminiscence of what is HRH
cake. I see crepe suzette #HappyBirthdayYourMajesty.”
Whilst in this instance it was crepes, not cakes, that were on the menu for
the mum of three, concerned followers were quick to wonder if she used the
same brand of eggs in the Queen’s sweet treat.
One Twitter user asked: “Do you use free range eggs in your cooking? I
ask as free range eggs usually don’t come in that packaging.”
Another agreed with the sentiment, writing: “Oh no, I also noticed the
eggs …Can’t do caged hen eggs at all.”
“@BritishMonarchy Looks like your birthday cake is made from caged hen
eggs,” one pointed out.
However, others stood up for the baking champion.
One wrote: “I get free range eggs in clear plastic recycled boxes. People
need to chill their self-righteous beans.”
Another agreed, writing: “‘Actually Asda sell the larger box of free
range eggs in this packaging so for all those worried, they are free range.”

On the eve of the birthday celebrations, Nadiya had told BBC’s The One Show
how nervous she was to be given such a huge responsibility.
With the presenters, she watched back footage of her making the orange drizzle
cake, which was filled with buttercream and marmalade.
She commented: “Okay that’s my hand trembling – I’m officially super
nervous!
“It’s such an honour to be doing this. I just don’t want to disappoint
the Queen.”
On Thursday, thousands of onlookers broke in to a spontaneous chorus of Happy
Birthday as the Queen cut in to her majestic purple and gold cake.
Beforehand, she had briefly chatted to Nadiya, asking her: “Is it nice?”
The baker replied: “I hope so!”
PETA Director, Mimi Bekhechi said: “The egg industry crams millions of
smart, sensitive chickens into sheds, where they can’t even breathe fresh
air or see sunlight – even on ‘free-range’ farms.
“What’s more, eggs are ticking time bombs, laden with saturated fat and
clogging people’s arteries.
“Fortunately, vegan baking is a piece of (egg-free) cake, which is why
PETA will be sending Nadiya information on ingredients – such as flaxseed,
pumpkin purée, and banana – which work just as well as binding agents,
without any of the cruelty.
“Now that’s something to celebrate!”
