Easter egg scandal as Thorntons charge £15 for £3 Aldi treat

Made by same company, and only difference is Thorntons offer a small selection box

THORNTONS’ Easter eggs costing up to £15 are the same as those available for
£2.99 at Aldi.

The posh choc firm makes products for the budget German store, including its
premium Master Roth range of eggs, a Sun probe found.

Aldi then sells the treats, which include one egg called the Chocolate Wonder,
for under £3.

At Thorntons the same egg is sold as the Continental Milk, Dark and White
Chocolate Egg.

It has cost £15 there, but it is now available for £10 – though the Thornton’s
version does include a selection of posh chocs to go wit hthe egg.

Even with the reduction and the extra nine chocolates which are included, the
Thorntons version works out at £3.73 per 100g.

The Aldi range, which also features the Dark Fudge Brownie egg, is just £1.62
per 100g.

Thorntons said: “We have been producing private label products for a small
number of retailers for years, where the Thorntons brand and products aren’t
sold.”

Retail expert Neil Saunders, from analysts Conlumino, said: “They can only
sell so much under their more expensive premium brand.”

Aldi said the chain remained committed to value.
