A FIRST date at Nando’s ended in tears after a man’s plan to fool a girl into
thinking he could handle a super spicy meal backfired spectacularly.
Jonny Smith, 25, has been single for a year and was clucking at the chance woo
the unnamed 22-year-old woman by taking her to restaurant chain, famous for
its spicy Peri Peri sauce.
Despite hating hot food, Jonny was worried that “plain equals lame” in the
eyes of girls looking for a red hot lover — so concocted what he thought was
a “fool-proof plan” when choosing the spice level for his food.
While asking for a plain half-chicken – with no spice whatsoever – he also
requested it to come with a black “extra hot” flag to fool the girl into
thinking he could handle the heat.
However the quality analyst’s feathers were ruffled when realised his plan had
gone horribly wrong, after a couple of bites into the searing hot chicken
breast.
Jonny was forced to admit defeat after eating a few more mouthfuls and spent
the next 15 minutes in the bathroom – leaving his date to eat alone.
Jonny, from Ossett, West Yorkshire, said: “I met the girl on Tinder and
we hit it off straight away as we both had the same kind of humour.
“I invited her out on a date and suggested Nando’s as who doesn’t like
that?
“I hate hot and spicy food and always avoid it but I was worried that
plain equals lame. Or at least mundane. I thought that she would think Peri
Peri spice equals very very nice.
“So I came up with this plan that I would get an extra hot flag in my
plain chicken and she would be really impressed. I have done this before so
I thought the plan was fool-proof. It turns out I was wrong.
“The problem was, I was really talking up the extra hot chicken and she
was saying ‘Oh, I can’t believe you like it that hot’. As it turned out, I
was digging quite a hole for myself.
“I must not have been clear in what I asked to the girl at the till but I
think it was because I was trying to say it subtly so that no one around
would hear – my date wasn’t too far away at our table.
“It was after only a couple of mouthfuls that I realised something was
up. I felt like my mouth was on fire. My eyes started watering and I
couldn’t really speak. I wanted to spit it out but needed to save face so I
carried on, trying to smile as I ate a few more mouthfuls.
“She started laughing a bit at me so I explained that it was hotter than
normal but I don’t think she really believed me.
“Soon she stopped laughing though as I had tears rolling down my face. I
think she was just embarrassed to have to sit with me.”
Jonny excused himself to the bathroom and spent the next 15 minutes with his
mouth under the cold water tap – leaving his unimpressed date to eat her
meal alone.
The pair left together without any dessert and Jonny said he drove her home in
silence.
Feeling like his chances were ruined with the girl, Jonny took to social media
to explain what happened to Nando’s.
The end of his post, which now has more than 14,000 likes and 2,600 shares,
reads: “Excellent service as always I may say, except for one little
detail, it wasn’t plain at all! It was EXTRA HOT!
“Look at my eyes Nando’s! Look what you’ve done to me! I couldn’t even speak
let alone chat the poor girl up. I doubt there’ll be a second date now.”
But the lovelorn lad is hopeful that since his post has now gone viral, the
girl may see the funny side and a second date might not be ruled out.
He said: “I haven’t contacted her since the date as I have heard about
this two day rule so that you don’t appear too keen.
“Perhaps by then she will have seen this post being shared so maybe that will
work in my favour. I really liked her and we were getting on quite well
before the ‘incident’. It was all hunky dory.
“But if there is another date, I would expect her to be buying the Nando’s. I
think Nando’s is a good place for a first date, I just won’t be taking any
chances with the heat next time.”

A member of Nando’s social media team saw the funny side of the incident and
replied: “Good morning Jonny. We’re sorry to hear about what happened last
night, we hope you’ve managed to dry your eyes since this unfortunate
incident.
“We’d never wish such an occurrence to happen to a gentleman as yourself,
although deceiving your date for the sake of your bravado is never something
we recommend. Being such a gent by giving her a lift and ordering her food
as well (assuming you paid for hers too? Extra brownie points earned there
if so), we’re sure she wouldn’t judge you on your inability to handle a hint
of spice. Unless she was all about the Extra Hot, then there might have been
a bit of an issue. But then again, opposites attract, right?”
The message added: “We’ve got our wings crossed for that second date.”
