I’ve just started smoking again and I’m not proud

CELEBRITY HEALTH CHECK: Kate Thornton

THIS week: Radio and TV presenter and mum-of-one Kate Thornton.

How are you?

I could be healthier. But I have a good diet. I have to make sure my son has
all the right things and as a by-product I eat a lot of the same things.

Any health worries?

Not yet but I’ve just turned 40 so I’m sure it’s all downhill from here.

Biggest vice?

I’ve just started smoking again and I’m not proud. I’ve got to get it into
check.

Trouble is the most interesting people are the ones outside smoking. I always
think, “I want to be outside with the cool ones.” I also drink too much
coffee.

Do you exercise?

I wish I loved running but I don’t, so I just do weights, resistance training,
ab crunches, power plate and the odd class. I try to do the school run
really quickly to get my heart rate up.

Favourite takeaway?

Sushi – there’s an amazing place I know delivers THE best
black cod. See? I do have some healthy predilections.

Have you ever dieted?

I refuse to wake up thinking, “I’m not going to eat X, Y or Z today.”

You’ll spend all day craving it, then you’ll eat it and end up feeling a total
failure.

If things start to get a bit tight I just cut the c**p for a while.

It took me a year to get back into shape after I had the baby.

Do you have breakfast?

I have porridge with honey. Porridge, coffee, gym – that’s a day when you feel
like you’re winning.

What’s the poorliest you’ve ever been?

When I was pregnant. My son Ben was battling to get out from 28 weeks and I
was really sick.

Any self-help tips?

I studied to become a counsellor last year when I’d just become a single mum
and wanted to be the best person I could be for my son.

As part of it you have to go into therapy, which was a really healthy thing
for me to do after 20 years in telly. You learn a lot about yourself and not
all of it very nice!

Did your parents teach you about being healthy?

I’m a child of the Seventies so there were a lot of Findus crispy pancakes –
but we always had veg.

Anything hereditary in your family you need to keep an eye on?

There are a few thyroid issues. I get really tired now so maybe I should get
checked out.

Would you want to live to 100?

Yes, if I was healthy.
