CHELSEA have submitted a planning application to build a new 60,000 seat
stadium at Stamford Bridge.
The dossier includes plans to demolish the current stadium and build a new
£600million arena in the same spot.
If given the go-ahead the new ground would become the fourth biggest in the
capital behind, Wembley, the Emirates and Tottenham’s new ground.
In a statement on their website, Chelsea revealed the new stadium would see
“facilities improved for every area” and offer an “outstanding view from
every seat in an arena”.
It’s expected the Blues could make Wembley their temporary home for a few
seasons whilst the works take place.
However, Tottenham – who
are building a new stadium at White Hart Lane – have reportedly been in
discussions with the Football Association to use Wembley temporarily also.
If given permission by the council, construction could begin as early as May
2016, with the faltering champions moving out at the end of the 2016-17
campaign.
Hammersmith and Fulham council have set a deadline for comments on the
application of Friday, 8 January 2016.
The designs have been proposed by Herzog & de Meuron who worked on Bayern
Munich’s Allianz Arena and the Olympic Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing.
The plans propose sinking the new stadium by four metres to reduce the effect
on neighbour’s views and light.
The stadium will contain a three-tier, four stand bowl with a club shop and
museum included.
There’s further good news for supporters with seats at the new ground being
placed as little as 7 metres from the action.
It comes as confirmations of owner Roman Abramovich’s commitment to the Blues,
despite their woeful season which sees them languishing in 14th place in the
league.
Chelsea have played at Stamford Bridge since 1905 with the last redevelopment
coming in the 90s.
However, its current capacity of 41,798 is significantly smaller than its
Premier League rivals Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City.

The Blues have warned fans to remain patient with the planning process
expected to last beyond this season, although if green-lighted they could be
playing in the new stadium by 2020.
Yet, not all the fans were happy with the designs for the new development with
some on twitter ridiculing the latest plans.
