Amir Khan has to buy new wardrobe after gaining the pounds for Saul Alvarez fight

AMIR KHAN’S pals reckon his move up in weight is a stroke of jeanius.

Khan, 29, faces WBC world middleweight champ Saul Alvarez at a catchweight of
155lb in Las Vegas on May 7.

He has had to buy new clothes after packing on extra muscle for the fight —
with his mates getting his top clobber which no longer fits.

Khan said: “I’ve had to buy jeans and stuff because my waist has got a little
bit bigger.

“My glutes have grown so the jeans weren’t fitting that well and I’ve also
gone from a medium to large in T-shirts.

“All my stuff that I like has had to be given away to friends. They’re happy
guys now — they want me to stay at this weight.”

Khan’s last three fights have been at welterweight, which required him to make
147lb.

And although he insists there is unfinished business in that division, the
Bolton star is happy to be heavier for the Alvarez bout.

He added: “Normally I’m killing myself making weight. This time, I think I’m
fighting at a weight I’m comfortable making.

“Time will tell if it’s something I like and am going to stick to, but at the
moment I feel good.

“I wanted to keep the speed and explosiveness, while focusing on generating
more power, so I’m on a lot of different protein shakes and supplements.

“That’s why you’ve seen me looking so hench, but the speed is still there. I
always knew I’d have it regardless of what weight I was going to be.

“At this weight, I won’t be killing myself and I’ll be going into the fight
very happy. I won’t be dehydrating myself to make weight and will be keeping
that strength.”

Alvarez, 25, is widely regarded as the favourite to come out on top at the new
T-Mobile Arena.

The man known as Canelo has lost just once in 48 pro bouts — to retired
pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather in September 2013.

But Khan is confident he can pull off one of the biggest shocks in boxing
history by toppling the Mexican.

He said: “Whatever Canelo brings to the table, we’re going to have answers
for. We’re working on different strategies to win.

“He is definitely going to be hit with shots he’s never been hit with. He’s
never fought anyone as quick as me with power — I think he’ll be shocked
when I hit him.

“Time will tell, but this is a good fight for me to show I can take shots at a
heavier weight.

“I really wanted to be in a big fight because that’s where I belong. I belong
in the biggest fights in boxing.

“That’s the reason I took this fight and I hope it inspires other fighters to
take a leaf out of my book.”
